slimming down trousers - a little help?

Question:
i've read some posts where people talked abouy getting the legs of their trousers slimmed down. i have a pair that definetly need this, but i'm a little wary. are there limits to how much they can be slimmed? how great is the potential of ruining the trousers? what do i need to tell my tailor (who is competent, but not exactly fashion forward)? anything else i need to be aware of? please share your wisdom. thanks
Answer:
if you're just slimming the legs down the seams it's not a big job. my tailor charges about $14 for that. thats assuming the waist and seat fit fine.
Answer:
Yea, you can take the legs in a bit, but it doesn't do much if the top block doesn't fit very well. You can't make a pair of 34s fit like a pair of 32s for example. You can turn a bootcut into a straightleg or a straightleg into a slightly tapered pair and maybe slim the thighs up a touch.
Answer:
ok, thanks. what i have fits great in the waist/seat, but the legs don't taper at all. guess i'll take them to the tailor and try my luck.
Answer:
Maybe bring a pair of pants or jeans that you like the fit of and have him tailor the trousers like that. It's always nice for the tailor to have something to work off of.
Answer:
just make sure that all four seams are taken equally. this keeps the legs hanging straight.
