Question:
hey guys,
Have some jeans that I need to hem, want to have the original bottoms replaced.
Looking for a tailor in the murray hill area that isn't too expensive ($10-$15 per pair).
Any recommendations?
TIA.
Answer:
bump, anyone?
Answer:
Do you mean you want to have the original bottoms sewn back on? If that's what you want, I'd advise against it.
If that's NOT what you want, then any competent tailor can hem a pair of jeans. If you want a chain stitch, just call a few places and ask if they offer it.
Answer:
yes i do want the original bottom sewn back on..why do you advise against it?
i hate the look of jeans without the original bottoms where it is clear that they have been hemmed
Answer:
Are these pre-distressed jeans? If so, a month of wear and washing will make the new hem look just as good as the first one.
Are these unwashed jeans? If so, the new hem will be exactly the same as the first one.
The hem you desire throws off the balance and drape of the leg, looks ridiculous from the inside and outside, and corrupts the integrity of the hem, making damage more likely.
Answer:
Your friendly neighborhood dry cleaner.
You welcome.
Answer:
there's a place by the diesel store on lex. there is a tailor that only works with jeans. bloomies sales people send their customers to him all the time.
peppino
780 lex ave
Answer:
does peppino do a chain stitch or does he cut and reweave/resew the original bottoms?
Answer:
i'm sure they do anything you ask for. those guys have been doing this for years so they should be able to accomodate you. they're so old school that they close shop for lunch.
Answer:
Nothing is rewoven during this procedure. It's plastic surgery for jeans. It's pretending to be something it's not.
Answer:
45rpm in soho chainstitches.
Answer:
dat homeless guy on 42nd and 3rd
Answer:
Original bottoms make the jeans look ugly... Chainstitching is great, however there are only 2 places in NYC that do it. BiG and 45rpm. The former can do it in 1-2 hours if they are not busy, they have yellow, white, black, and orange thread. I got my 5eps chainstiched there. They save the hems for you for whatever reason. Cost: $20
45rpm quotes one week turnaround time no matter what, at least in soho on the 2 times I asked. They ONLY have orange. However, the sales people rock as they recommended a tailor that they've had good experience with, not too far away: Ramon.
Sadly, this tailor fucked up my shit. I left brand new $300 light gray jeans with them to regular hem. 4 days later I picked them up, in a hanger+plastic covering. I always inspect clothing as anyone should fresh from the tailor, so naturally I did so, and they had gotten general tso's sauce or something similar spilled on my light gray unworn jeans! it was crazy, it was sticky and dense, and I panicked because I thought it was some stuck-in shit. After further examination, a while you wait dry cleaner fixed that for me.
Alright, so I'm rambling. Just go to BiG, or 45rpm and see if they can match the thread. if not, any tailor will do... Except Ramon. How the fuck can you be eating general tso's sauce directly over my clothes while working on them, and even then, try to hide it from the client.
Answer:
That's unfortunate Souper, as I have had nothing but good experiences with Ramon. Had him taper a pair of jeans for me and he did an excellent job.
