Question:
The weather is wavering between miserably humid and scorchingly hot right now, so for those of you who do wear shorts, what length do you like? Just above the knee is what I like. I have two pair that are below the knee, but they feel a little sloppy, a little A&Fish. I have a pair of Adidas short shorts from my dad which kind of rock, in a retro way, and I have a pair with a maybe 7 inch inseam which do not rock in any way at all.
What length do you guys like? What's the shortest you'll wear, and the longest? Is it different for bathing suits?

highly depends on your thigh build. I seen guys with some proud thighs and they pulled off the short that hit at the mid thigh well. As for me, I go for at the knee.

I prefer right at/slightly above the knee. I agree that below the knee shorts look pretty sloppy and i don't like them unless they're a bit slimmer and maybe tapered, but then it enters manpri category. Jcrew has a bunch of different lengths to look at if you just wanted to see how some shorts look. i think 9" is just slightly above the knee and 7" is a bit riskier above the knee. The 11" ones are the standard "a&fish" ones.

I was at Barneys the other day in search of a pair of shorts and tried on tons and tons of different cuts. I'm guessing that the proper length of shorts depends on your build and height, but on my build (athletic, 5 foot 7), right at or slightly above the knee is just about right.
Too high, and I feel like I'm flashing the world. Too low (below the knee) and it just looks sloppy.

fwiw, this subject came up in a blog on the sartorialist site and almost 200 people responded, including many women. the majority of people (of both sexes) favored shorts that hit at or just above the knee.

I will admit to owning a pair of shorts that fall into that category. However, in my defense I have pretty large calves from cycling so they kind of rest on the top. Otherwise, I'm a slightly above the knees kind of guy.

I bought a pair of slim vintage khakis and made them shorts with a pair of scissors.
At first I cut just at the knee and it was just a little too long, so I kept cutting until I reached the perfect length. Then into the washer for just a little fraying and they are cheap and look nice.

Hmm..never really knew that, I have a few pairs of shorts I like..they go to knee..I never really liked shorts that go above the knee or at the knee... I liked a little below, I hate how shorts ride up some when you sit down...
