Question:
So, I had this thing for a while, and still sort of do, where I tried very hard to avoid brands/looks closely associated with the retailer named above. As you might imagine, this is pretty problematic; like many other chain retailers, they usually simply copy a given season's basic looks and package them for easy consumption by mall teens everywhere. Interestingly, certain brands (espec. H&M and now Uniqlo) are able to do this without the hating that UO inevitably inspires; why is this? Is it the lame name? The stupid f***ing ironic t-shirts? Am I overreacting? Ridiculous for even trying to avoid UO looks?
Answer:
i have proof that UO wants to take a sufu and sf staple and blow it up. i dont like the idea.
as far as MY look... they could never do it... who would buy it?
Answer:
To delve a little deeper, is it me, or couldn't many of the looks that garner praise 'round here be composed entirely of UO pieces, with none of us the wiser based only on a grainy photo? Or is that sort of the point - to rock the higher-quality sneaks/jeans/button-ups/hoodies/jackets that UO rips off? Again, am I overreacting?
As an aside, this all arose from my determination to by a brand of sneaker you can't get there; I settled on Pony, specifically their City Wings Dunk copies. Finish Line has them in some cool colors, but there seems to be nothin' but hate for that brand here and on SF (and, yes, I am ashamed to admit I checked Hypebeast, too). This is sort of what I'm getting at; should I just bite the bullet and get actual Dunks, even though UO and every skate/punk/hip-hop poseur hypebeast rocks them?
Am I making any sense here?
Answer:
Now isn't that interesting...
Edit: I'd buy it.
Answer:
your being so noncomformist its almost a little bit douchebagish
just because someone else is rocking dunks doesnt meann they are rocking them the same way you would.
Answer:
I realize many people here rock Dunks; I'm not suggesting you're a bunch of poseurs. I'm just wondering if you feel the Hypebeast thing has detracted from their overall appeal/cache - see the Dunks 4evar thread.
Also, another strike against Pony is that they have a line of official Snoop shoes called Doggy Biscuitz.
Answer:
Not quite the answer I was looking for, but I realize you're trying to help.
Maybe I should just chill the f*** out...
Answer:
nobody here looks remotely similar to someone dressed head-to-toe in Urban Outfitters. Go look at UO's website and look at their models. It's pretty easy to tell. The way UO's items fit is usually pretty poor, and they're always missing crucial detailing that separates the cheap shit from the real shit.
it's even worse with their girls' clothing, imo.
Answer:
I just don't like the atmosphere of the store, same with A&F.
Answer:
I'm okay with UO, they even had a nice stack of the vice do and don't book and often order vans slip-ons in various colorways. I'm not their target demographics and I sincerely doubt somebody with even a wiff of fashion sense would think what I wear comes from there. I really don't get the hate associated with some fashion stores, as long as it doesn't come with an associated hateworthy lifestyle. UO is for 19 y/o art school anglo hipsters, not my crowd but not glorified date-rapists either.
Answer:
the cologne that wafts out of A&F just reeks of date rape
as for UO, their house "Fink" brand does seem to mirror what H&M/Zara does, but more along the geek-chic style. They have carried some good time tested gear like Big E 501s and Fred Perry polos mixed with their wanker clothes. I had a gift card last week for UO and amazingly found an awesome Ben Sherman buttondown in a great checked colorway that is currently one of my fave shirts.
Answer:
Echoing some of the statements already made. There are very few items that I'll consider looking at when I'm at UO. The store is a little overpriced, selling what typically looks like last season's (or even last years) stock at full MRSP. My biggest beef is with the staff. We put down the stripey shirt, redbull and vodka (sorry drizzt) AmJack crowd here for being d-bags - but I have never encountered such a level of artiste-elitism, and douchebaggery as I have with the UO staff.
Answer:
The fink brand puts out some nice trousers. I do agree that most of their stuff doesn't fit well and I they really try to cater to the pseudo-hipster crowd. The only thing I really like about UO (at least in Canada) is their selection of Ben Sherman and Penguin shirts in the summertime.
Answer:
Prediction for 2007: The O.C. will be cancelled and UO will scramble for a new target market.
Answer:
I find myself avoiding styles that show up at Urban Outfitters, but I do occasionally buy something there. With so much stuff in stock, every once in awhile something decent is bound to show up. You can always tell the difference anyway, between something from PAM, Evil Genius, Corpus, Covet, etc. (Brands that Urban Outfitters copies) and the crappy mass of stuff at Urban Outfitters. It's the difference between an OC-copying geek-chic-er, a thrift shopper, and someone who just looks *stylish*
Bona I do think you're overreacting. When it gets down to it, just buy what you like and fuck everyone else.
