Racism...

Question:
So today, I was walking around the mall with my family when a guy (race shall remain unrevealed) decided to say Me Chinese...blah blah blah to mock us. I, in my fury, yelled back Very, very mature. But that's beside the point. I thought that by this day and age, well over 200 years of inter-racial interaction in the U.S., people would be mature enough to realize that America is made up of more than just one race. I suppose this kind of behavior would have been more understood about 20 years ago when a certain racial group dominated, but in today's society where no single race dominates, this kind of behavior is just plain out inane. I'm just really frustrated at this. What do you guys think?
Answer:
its hard for me to describe racism. it still exists yes, but the question is to what extent?
also, i believe stereotyping is much more of a bigger issue than racism.

Answer:
Unfortunately theres always gonna be racism :[
Answer:
You're right. It's really really stupid. Where I live, Whites are no longer the predominate race, mexicans are. But that really has no point seeing as mexican people can be just as racist as white people, black people, etc... it makes me mad when people of non-black race say the N word to a friend and think it's funny, or when non-asian people always say 'chink', and non-white people say ' cracker' etc.. etc... It's sad that we can say certain words to only people who are int he same race as us. 2 black people saying the N word is totally acceptable and it shouldn't be. Asians saying 'chink' to each other is also accepted but I don't think it should.
I think that people need to seriously wake up and realize that america's made up of many races.
I was thinking about this a long time ago, and you can say She looks Chinese or He looks African you can't really say She looks American because when you think about it, everyone does seeing as we're made up to all the different races..
Ah, I dunno....heavy topic yeah?

Yes. People use American as a race.
I was reading the mixed artists thread and somebody said He's half Korean half American or something.
Half American? American isn't a race.
Give it 50 years and us browns will be the majority.

I thought you were Korean. May I ask what ethnicity you are? Curiousity.

'American' technically is a race/ethnicity... Unfortunately, less than 10% if their population exists today thanks to a bunch of white Europeans from a few hundreds of years ago, but whatever.

Well, true. I was talking about white Americans though.

I'm Korean...
Answer:
I think all people of different races are each as much racist...they just show it in different ways.
Like, if a young white girl is walking down a dark street, and see's a black man walking on the same street going the opposite way, she is most likely to turn earlier or cross the street. ((and I'm not saying this as a fact, but as a hypothecical thing))
African Americans I think voice their racism more, as do Mexican people. But then again, so do white people. And I think it's hella wrong for lalalalovesong to say blacks are the most racist, when there are still parts of America where whites still pull hate crimes according to race! It goes both ways!!

I agree with this. The origin of those words will always be negative no matter what kind intentions you have for using them today. :T I think FOB is bad as well.
A few months ago, I overheard a conversation in a Vietnamese/Chinese store talking about how these random, racist kids go in and shout obscenities to the store owners.
An example:
Kid: I hate Vietnamese!
Store owner: Why?
Kid: They killed my father in the war!
Store owner: My parents died in the war too. Do you think I'm not hurt? (or something like that; not sure if she said it to the kid or was just only in the conversation)

omg how stupid .
I hate generalizations like that. I'm really into Japanese culture, but I'm half black nd half white...and a really dumbass point my dad made onxe is Why be all into Japan? We fought them in World War II, Remeber Pearl Harbor?
I just wanted to scream STFU!!! Dumbass ignorant people need to stop and think before they start making rash generalizations like that
edit: I also think FOB is wrong. Asians say it to each other and it's fine, but if I ever said that to an asian person it'd be racist.
Answer:
lol. That's why people call
Caucasians whites (and apparently, crackers??)
Chinese Chinky
Japanese japanese
Asians yellow
(is there one for Korean?)
African Americans Black
Indians brownies
and so on
it's always going to be here, most likely because there was so much racism in the past, and.. we're just keeping everything up

First.. it can be established that racism exists in America. Although some societies are very diverse (perhaps you live in one, as do I), America is still largely dominated by Whites. States like California and New York are very diverse, but for the most part, the middle and southern states are not. This is just for factual purpose.. not blaming Whites or anything since anyone of any race is capable of racial discrimination. I would not consider that people are not mature for discriminating, since it has a lot to do with nurture and family/societal background. It is wrong and definitely inane but many people unconsciously have racist thoughts, and then you have the more blunt and extreme cases where people openly act against certain races. The problem of discrimination is out into the open, but the solution is... not to say nowhere, but in hard-to-find places.

yeah you're right.
I've noticed there are families who don't belive in racism, and then families who's decendants were like confederate soldiers or somthing and family is the main way of feeling towards racism getting passed down :\
Answer:
i grew up in a predominantly white town, and the only sort of racism i`ve encountered was from some smart-mouthed neighborhood kids.
one time my roommate asked me if i only had asian friends. my friend who was in the room at the time [also asian] told her us minorities have to stick together, but you wouldn`t know

especially my parents
my mom doesn't want me even liking a Japanese boy because my grandpa (mom's side) fought against Japan, and Japan captured Taiwan while she was still in school, blah blah
plus, my parents say that they prefer a China or Taiwan boy (..why not girl?! I could be lesbian!) for me rather than any other race. They didn't grow up in a place where everything is mixed together, everyone was just Taiwanese or Chinese in Taiwan =/

Gooks.
Black is not derogatory... Have you ever met a black person? It's a completely acceptable term with 99% of the black community.
The Black Panthers
Black Power

Answer:
^n*gga is ok as long as it's a black person calling another black person that.
I like how black people say it's wrong to say it, but no one really does anything about it.
And also how white kids call each other n*gga thinking it's cool.
