Question:
Does it take any effort at all? Most people on this forum make it sound like open-mindedness is easier than being close-minded, and all you have to do is say you accept everything and you're done o_O
I've heard a lot of I'm not as close-minded as you, that's why I can accept this kind of arguments before, so I was just thinking: Aren't you against what the other believes then?
If close-mindedness and ignorance are related, what about not knowing? That's still on the same line as the other two.
*EDIT*
Define the term in your own words.
Then, explain why you believe so. Or if you do agree with others' definitions, why it makes sense to you.
Answer:
If you have to exert effort to be open-minded, doesn't that mean you're only trying to be open-minded? And then, couldn't you say that you're not really open-minded? Rather, you are only expanding your mind.
It takes no effort to be close-minded or open-minded: it only takes effort for the close-minded to deny certain ideas, and for the open-minded to seek out certain ideas.
Answer:
It takes me a ridiculous amount of energy just to be close-minded to some things as opposed to how some people think.
From how I see it, I really don't think anyone can be open-minded.
But that's because I see it as accepting something, like trying to accept the teachings of creationism and the teachings of evolutionism, AND THEN those that accept that one LED to another; either way, each of them is still not accepting the other's belief, which in turn leads to...well, close-mindedness.
But enough of what I think, how would you define open-mindedness? Is it knowing a lot of people? Knowing a lot of things? Common sense?
Answer:
Openminded, to me means being completely unjudgemental.. you can accept ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that's different, or happening in the world
i dont think, according to my own definition, that ANYONE is completely open-minded.
we are somewhat, but will never be completely, unless you are someone who ACCEPTS racism, murder, suicide, cheaters, liars etc.
so basically, if theres a person who hates every race other than their own, and you think they're crazy, that would make you close-minded
if u can accept them and understand, thats the way they are and think, then you might be a little open-minded

Hmm everyone must be close-minded cause they're against my opinons (IMG:style_emoticons/default/phew.gif)
But of course, it's cause I don't believe in what the society follows, and we all know everything revolves around society.
Answer:
Open-minded to me means you're willing to listen to and accept new ideas. Just because you don't like someone else's opinion doesn't mean you're close-minded. It's the fact that you listened to it and even considered it in the first place that makes you the opposite of that.

That's interesting, so I guess people CAN be open-minded...I guess.
Anyone can listen to someone, and if they respond to it, it means they've...considered it somewhat o_O

Once I replace the term goat sex with interracial or homosexual, people start jumping all over the place. I wonder why. It's not like people should be thinking with a racist or...err...what's related to homosexuality?... attitude, so...
Answer:
To have an open-mind is to have the willingness to accept justification for opinions and/or perspectives about the world that differ from one's own.
To have a closed mind is to be arrogant in one's own beliefs and to dismiss the justification for all opinions and/or perspectives that differ from one's own.

yes thats why i used goat sex. no one ...well there are are people that do. but really no one likes goat sex i know i dont but i dont want to be called close minded because of it.
just because people dont like homosexual or interracial dating doesnt mean they are racist closed minded. like my boyfriends mom...she doesnt want her son dating me cause im black...alot of people have been calling her racist i dont think she is. i do think shes closed minded, just cause shes not willing to listen or try to understand it. people are odd...
Answer:
there is so such thing as a person thats 100% open-minded
no matter what everyone say, each person got their absolute no-nos and some of those no-nos might be closed-minded to other people, even if it came from an open-minded person
everyone have their absolute believe in certain thing, who are you to judge whether they are open or closed minded
Answer:
open-minded: ready to entertain new ideas; an open-minded curiosity; open-minded impartiality

It's either you naturally are open-minded or you can TRY or you just fail at attempting so. It's like stupidity.
Answer:
she doesnt want her son dating me cause im black...alot of people have been calling her racist i dont think she is
I don't think the definition of racism is a matter of opinion. She doesn't like you solely because you are black. That is racism by definition. There is no debate over the matter.
Furthermore, close-mindedness can certainly exist simultaneously with racism. As a matter of fact, both can often be found complementary of one another.
Answer:
In direct response to the topic question, I'd say it takes a considerable effort to be open-minded for most of us. Although once you get the hang of it, it comes pretty naturally. People refuse to hear what they don't want to hear. We are instinctively close-minded. As humans, though, we are capable of acting against our instincts and have come to realize that LISTENING to others is a better way to go.
I think everybody (on Soompi, and in the world) should stop USING the word closed-minded. Every time somebody doesn't agree with somebody else, they just call them closedminded and think it's over. It doesn't really get you anywhere. It's like,
- By my unique definition of open-mindedness, you are closed-minded
- Um, ok
By calling somebody closed-minded...aren't you closing your mind to the possibility that that person HAS considered other ideas? There should be less focus on word definitions (typical existential ramble) and more focus on solving problems. If someone seems to be forgetting something, let them know and show your side of the story, don't just call them closed-minded and end it.
Answer:
another thing i forgot to say
the only way you can say a person is closed-minded is IF absolutely no one agrees with his/her opinions
and to reply to the topic question, i honestly dont think it mights much effort to be open-minded, its just an ablity you get since birth, either you have it or you dont
Answer:
open minded
means that you can accept everything
you might not agree, but you can look at the situation without psyching out
like that whole porn issue in L&R

I'm sure everyone does that... at least once in a while. But I guess there's also a difference between being open-minded and having open-minded tendencies. ^^;;
Of course no one is going to be 100% open-minded.
Let's see. People who are against interracial relationships. I consider that incredibly close-minded. Mostly because, as cliched as this sounds, you CAN'T judge people based on their race. If people like that were more open-minded, they'd probably find other people of other races that they get along just fine with.
And homophobia. I consider that close-minded too. Someone's sexuality doesn't really reflect what kind of person they are. Saying you don't like someone because they like someone of their same gender isn't being open.
Answer:
imo, if you're openminded, you wouldn't have to say you're openminded. it should be a done deed. but since you want a definition: not too quick to judge, considers other perspectives, doesn't take offense to criticism, etc.
Answer:
she doesnt want her son dating me cause im black...alot of people have been calling her racist i dont think she is.
I can understand why people would call her that, but you never know, it could be just an excuse for her own insecurities. Such as...oh, I don't know, she's afraid of black people? Like even IF this racism people speak of is illogical and unjust (actually, I don't think anything in this world is just), some people just can't help it.
Like I know my friend got raped before cause she was new to the country and was stuck in an area that's predominantly white. Her teacher was stupid and she had stupid classmates that looked down on her cause 1: she was asian, and 2: she was an immigrant (hell this was 4 years ago you don't usually see this in CANADA of all countries). Anyways, ya, just an example of how people THINK she just doesn't like white people cause no one knows what happened, plus even IF it was only ONE white person, people wouldn't take that seriously.
So at least you're not simply concluding that she's racist like others, cause I think those that do, are no different from those they criticize, cause both generalize and make semi-false assumptions, and jump to conclusions based to that. I'm not saying she DOES have a reason, but who knows, at least you don't think she's racist simply cause she doesn't like you cause you're black.
the only way you can say a person is closed-minded is IF absolutely no one agrees with his/her opinions
All of those that disagree with you still come under iDoof's explanation. There is no 'right' opinion, so perhaps everyone just hasn't considered that person's idea, but just cause no one thinks it makes sense, doesn't mean that person is close-minded.
It's not like I'm going to go agree with others and discard some of my beliefs just cause people don't like it. If people always did that, there would be no change.
I remembered how back then, philosophers and other scientists were looked down upon due to their discoveries. But if they just turned around and stopped investigating cause people didn't like their ideas, would our world be the same as it is today?
Or maybe it WAS for the best, if we didn't go so far out, beyond the reaches of our imaginations. If people confined themselves to this world, and this world ALONE, thinking that they were the center of the universe, gotta imagine what kind of life that would be. And no, I really don't think anyone here can cause we've already been exposed to the world where science rules all.
Let's see. People who are against interracial relationships. I consider that incredibly close-minded. Mostly because, as cliched as this sounds, you CAN'T judge people based on their race. If people like that were more open-minded, they'd probably find other people of other races that they get along just fine with.
Who knows, they may be using I don't like interracial as a medium where everyone understands. I mean, if they go on and talk about some preference thing and make a huge explanation where others would be like WTF and Z0MG 1NC0H3R3NC3, that would be worse than having people simply think you're racist and close-minded.
Although I guess there's no excuse for homophobia: either you're fine with it, or you're not.
