Whereas alot of younger kids can hear them easily, there are many adults who have reported FEELING the adult-proof ringtone more than actually hearing it. And they almost universally say it's nauseating or headachy. So I'd say you're still preceiving the sound.
My 16 year old sister can hear everything including the 17khz tone clearly. She cannot hear the 20khz tone at all.
Your speakers or headphones do matter SOMEWHAT. Most ARE able to playback frequencies up to 22khz. So if you've got the good hearing then you should be able to hear all of them... unless you've got some really REALLY crappy speakers that can only do up to 18khz (there are a small number of them out there).
