Why Are Immigrants Treated As Second Class Citizens?

Question:
Well, I was just wondering.
I mean.... immigrants always seem to be looked down upon.
They are always the ones who seem to be up to no good, etc, etc.
Pffft, freakin' immigrants. Doin' their weird stuff again.
Why IS that? Especially here in America. I remember, being an immigrant myself --- without the good command of the English language---, when I was teased inexorably as a young'un.
Are there any instances of you being treated that way?

Answer:
Well I have nothing against immigrants and no one should be treated that way.
But people usually have problems with illegal immigrants.

Are they called aliens?
Answer:
Yeah, that happens alot over here too.
Probably they 'dont belong' here? I have no idea.
I personally hate it.
Answer:
Happens in most countries and seems to be getting worse before it gets better..In America it's Mexicans & Muslims, in Europe it's Muslims, Indians, Poles, in East Asia it's SE Asians or just plain other East Asians, etc. It enables right wing governments to use it as a factor to spread fear so they can come into power
Answer:
Apparently they won't tease you as much if you show them up in english (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif)
Answer:

Are they called aliens?
Ummmm I think so.
But I don't call them that.
Answer:
Well alien is any immigrant who hasn't been naturalized but I would guess for many it has a negative connotation (because the word alien also means excluded, or not belonging to)
The fact that immigrants are looked down upon is that many of those white Americans have been living such a cushy life in America they forgot or don't care where they came from and how the country came to be what it is. In a word, it's ignorance. Sadly I'm not sure those people will ever learn.

some are immigrants...my family in particular are Refugees, we had no choice but to come here, i don't think being treated as second class citizens is right..... happens all the time.. though i was born in the U.S. and i ignore being treated that way but i see it happen alot, my parents... _____ me no like at all,
Answer:
They do that because of ignorance, the immigrants don't know any English, and/or illegal immigrants. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif) I agree with Tetra. They should show them up in English.... Or at least make fun of them in their own language. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
Answer:
I find that belief incrediably stupid seeing as how our ancestors (Europeans, Africans, Asians) were immigrants. To call someone a stupid immigrant and to tell them to get out of our country is offensive to their ancestors who brought them here. The U.S. is a country built by immigrants.
My mother is an immigrant and she refuses to let anyone treat her as a second class citizen. She speaks English fluently even though she came to the U.S. when she was 8 years old and only spoke Spanish. She went to college, graduated and holds two degrees when most people only hold one. She is a naturalized American, American being the key word, and she has a place in this country just as much any other person who's family has been here for decades. That should be the belief in this country but we still have ignorant people who still think otherwise.
I'm a first generation American in my family so I have never been a victim of verbal abuse from people. Thankfully, I haven't seen it done to my mother. I don't know if it happens to my grandmother (she is also an immigrant) because she still has her accent but generally people don't know what she is (as in race/ethnicity) right off the bat.

it's just stupid to treat immigrants as second class citizens. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
yeh, definately show them up in english...with yo mama jokes.
Answer:
Yes, I've been treated as a second class citizen, since I'm Mexican/Spanish.
These days people are starting to think I'm only half-Mexican or something, because my skin is turning lighter somehow (maybe becaues of no sun? haha). While I don't look white, I don't look Mexican either, so there's less of a problem now. I definitely don't believe it's because the US has become more tolerant of 'non-natives,' though.
Ignorance and racism are msotly the reasons for immigrants being treated badly, or not as well as white people, or 'native' citizens. Ignorance because most of the time, if you're not white, lots of people might assume that you came from Mexico or something. Racism because ...well, there's no real explanation for being racist, IMO.
Also, there are many immigrants whose English isn't on par as a native citizen, and people are irritated because 'if you're in America, you should know English.' It is annoying sometimes, but things like not knowing langauges/customs relative to America creates stereotypes which lead to ignorance.
Yeah. Sorry if I went too off tangent there.
Answer:
It's b/c people fear what they don't understand.
So if you speak a different language or practice a different religion or have a different culture some people have to hide their insecurities by teasing you. It's not right at all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
Answer:
Uhhh hate to say this but they are treated like second class citizens cause they ARE second class citizens. They aren't natural American citizens, American born, so they are categorized as second class citizens.

I know what you mean, I saw some Hmong people trying to cash a Government check and this old white guy in the back of the line became very angry because they didnt speak good English and they were holding up the line
he was saying stuff, like he did two tours in Vietnam and he was calling them f-ckin GOOKs and communists, etc, then they hurried up and cashed the check and left

I think a lot of it also has to do with racism, you never see people making fun of caucasion immigrants like
people from England, Italians, Canadians, etc
another reason some people look down on asian immigrants is because of all the crime & gang activity
they give asians a bad reputation / bad name

I'm going to go by this logic and say that that's no excuse to treat them any differently. They might be second-class citizens, but in my book that means nothing, as far as the content of this topic goes.
The way you treat people should not be based off of where they come from, what ethnicity they are, what languages they speak, culture they embrace, or anything like that. It most certainly should not be based off of your class. It should be based off the the individual themselves. That being said, you should not treat a Mexican you've never even met any differently than for example a white person you've never met. Do you see where I'm coming from?
This is as far as racist behaviour, making fun of people, hate crimes, or whatever goes. However if an employer doesn't want to hire an illegal immigrant I can't blame them since they could get in trouble for it..
Just for the record, when I say you I mean you in general. Not you, the person I quoted. ^^;
