I believe this period of time was when the Ottoman Empire expanded to become one of the strongest empires in Europe/Middle East/N.Africa. in US history text books, the Ottoman Empire is rarely mentoined. Only in college did professors really emphasize how powerful they were. They lasted for a very long time too, all the way into the 20th century.
