Question:
i was at a marching band competition, and during warm-ups and stuff, our band director read us a letter from an alumni. he was a senior the year before who graduated. he told us good luck and stuff and that he missed us. it said that he joined the army and he was in basic training.
the weird thing is that people felt bad for him! some girls were crying, and my friend felt sorry for him. what the heck?!?! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) this was shocking for me! when i heard, i was thinking wow good for him!. i thought joining the military was a honorable and heroic thing to do. but do people think it's sad? i want to join the military too, but i don't want people to be sad over it. when did joining the military become something to cry about? is it because of the war going on in iraq? i dunno...i'm so confused...
so what do you think about high school kids who join? do you think it's a good or bad thing?
Answer:
it can be because of the war
why people feel sad for it
but generally, if people at my school heard someone entered the military
the would feel bad b/c the students would think that he's/she's gonna have a horrible life
b/c all these kids worry about is money & getting good jobs and going to good colleges
personally the army scares me
living on a schedule and waking up when i'm told to wake up
sleeping when i'm told to sleep
(is that how it really is in the military though?)
and intense physical workout everyday
ugh
it's just not appealing to me
but NJROTC is pretty big at my school so..
iono a/b other people
but i personally dont wanna join the military
Answer:
^ that really is true. people really don't wanna join the millitary cause of the war and stuff. and since we have that friggin idiot BUSH damn. thats WAY worse. all this is cause of BUSHHHHH. UGHHHH.
Answer:
i mean joining the army is a heroic thing
but i had a classmate in my senior that was in JROTC..and he was hyped up for it
a year later i go to Walmart and i see his picture b/c he had died in Iraq (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) RIP Jeremy
Answer:
It was heroic and prideful until Bush screwed that idea over.
Answer:
personally i don't think joining the miltary isn't bad. there are many other fields that people can get into other than putting you in the frontline. i know this one guy who joined the air force and he's a firefighter. like you said its just the war that's going on right now that makes people dislike the miltary, other than that i still think its a good career choice.
Answer:
Maybe heroic but not so honorable anymore.
War isn't as gentlemanly as it was before. There's no such things as the Treaty of Versailles or stuff like that with terrorists. No mercy. Kill prisoners of war or ransom or torture them.
Then again being heroic usually gets you killed.
The military isn't a good career choice. You don't get paid much at all and you're always at a high risk of death.
Answer:
I'm a full supporter for anyone who joins the military.
A lot of my friends are joining, and I have major respect for them.
It's not something easy to wake up to.
I just think it's sad when you think of all the wars, deaths, freak accidents, etc.
Answer:
I went to Navy bootcamp right after I graduated this year, and yeah I got both positive and negative feedback, but none the less, I had people that I didn't even knew that I exist comment on things and it's just amazing what some people say. Overall they really respect this profession either it be patriotism, or ignorance, I mean...that's what really keeps all the military members going. Without family, friends, and our shipmates support, we're nothing, because we won't have that flare or motivation to perform everyday, it gives us that little something to look forward to when we finally get home...hoorah ^__^
Answer:
I don't know about your dude, but my friend joined the navy so he could get an education and a job at the same time. apparently they pay for your college education when you do certain things (he wanted to be a pharmacist).
he actually can't get sent to iraq because of some problem with his citizenship status (he's not one), so he's cool with being over in cali. He says there are a lot of cuties. Lucky dog.
He's getting sent to Japan next year, I think.
I envy him.
But I also support everyone who joins the military with the intention to protect our freedom and stuff. Whether or not they fight or maintain vehicles or whatever, they're good people to me.
Answer:
I would be very proud to be in the French Foreign Legion
I think people feel sad about your friend joining the army because the US is getting their @ss kicked in Iraq, by a bunch of insurgents!
they are fighting a guerilla war against US forces, the war is now un-winnable the Iraqi insurgents will continue to fight for as long as it takes.
maybe 30 years? maybe 200 years? thats how they fight in the middle east, they arent afraid of the US
Answer:
i don't think badly about people joining the army.. i know a lot of my friends that are joining the army, navy, and airforce. some of them are already in it. i really hope they are safe.. and for those that aren't in it yet, i hope they will be safe too.
Answer:
My fiance graduated early from highschool so that he could join the Marines, and he got mixed feedback about his decision.
Most of our friends were sad b/c he was leaving, and the danger he was putting himself in b/c he signed up as infantry which means that he'll be sent over atleast twice in the four years he's in. But everyone who knows him knows it was his dream to be a Marine, so everyone is very proud of him...
I also have a brother who is in the Army, and he just got back from Iraq last weekend.
Everyone was sad that he joined because there wasn't a real reason for him joining other than the money and steady job... No one in my family really thought he'd be sent over b/c they don't need him b/c of his job type, but he got sent anyway.
I think the people who get sad and upset about people joining the military are the ones who don't have family members in the military, so they don't understand what it's like to be proud and respectful of someone who you didn't expect to make you feel that way.
I also think people without family in the military also only focus on the war, and how many deaths there are...
I know that I am proud of everyone who serves, and am grateful to them and thier families because it's a sacrifice on both parts...Which is something I know firsthand...
Answer:
for me.. i think its a brave thing.. and dont blame bush about wars nowadays not being honorable.. after high tech guns were made, like the glory feeling is kinda gone.. now its like explosion and hell on earth instead of ur usual marching and gun shooting with like 2% chance of hitting someone lol!
ill join the military if i get accepted to VMI.. if not, ill live as a civilian..
Answer:
its brave but it is kind of a sad thing.
being in the army means that you;re more likely to die in war fighting for something you may not really believe in.
Answer:
it seemed heroic and patriotic when it was WWII or Vietnam...
but fricking Bush has just made it so hard to respect the decision of goin to war. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

I really think the US should have stayed out of the war with Iraq, because the original plan was because they think Saddam has weapons of mass destruction, and they NEVER FOUND ANY WEAPONS of MASS DESTRUCTION (IMG:style_emoticons/default/fury.gif)
Bush used that as an excuse to go to war
actually the USA started the war, they didnt even have any proof Iraq was in any way connected to the terrorist attacks of 911 in New York City
Answer:
Honestly it is on the war, but that's what the military is for.
It's also because people signed up to go the middle east for one-two years, and they're having to serve four years against their will. Most people who go to Iraq don't come back. And when they're on leave and come back to the U.S. not a lot of people treat them right.
So that's probably why.
Answer:
You get brainwashed in the military.. how is that an honorable thing?
Plus, only a small amount of people who join the military actually get money for college tuition. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
Answer:
I went into the Navy right out of high school, never made it out of RTC (and that still pisses me off to this day!). But even I received backlash from fellow students and even teachers. They could not see the fact that when you take the steps to join the military, you take pride in the fact that your becoming a member of something great. That your no longer on your own, your now are responsible for you and your shipmates.
When I hear that folks have signed up for the military, I congratulate them on doing something that I was not physically capable. I take pride in the fact that we have some very good men and women in the Armed Services. There is nothing to be wrong or sad about being in the military.
