Question:
I know there was a topic like this previously and there was a horde of answers saying that no, religion is not needed because of such and such reason.
What I haven't seen yet is the other side, why religion IS needed in society.
Maybe the people who do believe that it is needed felt to shy to post? It is just too easy nowadays to put down or disprove religion.
I believe that religion IS still needed, but looking upon books and articles there are so many people that dismantle the things I believe in.
So what is your opinion, why is religion still needed in society?
So how about another question...Since most of you decided that religion is NOT needed anymore,
how do you think you/the people around you will be effected if the government outlawed any religious acts.
Religious acts being prayer, wearing symbols, going to church, everything to do with religion. How do you think
North America would be? (Because North America seems like the continent that is the least concerned with
religion). Do you think that many conflicts will be resolved since everybody has NO religion? (One conflict is
with muslims, the whole 9/11 bit)

I don't believe it is needed. You can have your own religion, but I believe that organized religion as a whole is a bad idea; just look at all the problems it's caused throughout history. And leaders of such religions tend to end up corrupt sooner or later, one way or another.
So yeah, I don't see why religion is ever needed by any society.

It is easy to refute your statement because there are many people in this world who are not religious, yet they lead wholesome lives filled with morals. I'm not religious, yet I know the difference between right and wrong and so do many others. I'd like to think my mother is a good parent, thank you.

Despite all the hatred that happened in the past, religion does a lot of good things too. People just tend to see the bad things. Religion is what helps me through the bad times and the question of the unknown. My faith isn't strong, but I believe there is a high power,,, and I am sure it is there for a reason. Everyone's opinions and views are different in God, and so you can't even imagine what he's really like. He has curly hair, this red dot on his forehead and whatever. No, he looks like Jesus because he was his father.

I am Christian, but thats just because my parents force it on me..I tried making my parents stop me from taking me to church since I clearly said that I dont believe in God whatsoever and they almost killed me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif)

religion is like chopsticks, those who are raised with it will understand how it works and appreciate it's usefulness, and those who are foreign to it wont understand it at all (at first), but it wont kill you, you can just turn to other food utensils(for those of different religions), or use your hands(for atheists)

Personally, I don't think it's absolutely needed. I agree that it is something that can save peoples' lives and shape them up, but that's just what it is. And that's all it is, IMO.
I do respect other people's beliefs but I also hate how religious people try to preach to people who don't follow A religion, or even worse their own religion.
What it all boils down to: Religion is absolutely not needed in society. What for? To cause problems? Because that's ALL thats going to come out of it.

This is the kind of attitude I used to have as an atheist, but you really should tone it down a bit. Things like that can be SO offensive to people it's not even funny.
I used to be just like you. I could argue about religion forever and ever. But I don't like to argue it with people anymore, because I've made some of the most religious people I know question their own faith. Even though I don't believe in God and think the whole concept is ridiculous myself, I know that religion is not something to mess with and that it's a very sacred thing.

lol, well, just incase you're not jkingly saying that, i'll elaborate, those who eat with utensils are using something to help them, like how people use(i'm using that word use cuz i cant seem to find a more fitting term) religion to help them, and those who eat with their hands are more relying on themselves. by no means was that meant to be offensive to anyone ^^
