So say I'm playing a clip from a movie and I want to capture a clip from the audio, can I do it directly onto my computer thru a program or is the only way I can do this is through a mic? i want to avoid using a mic because my laptop speakers are crap and so is the mic i have at hand. if anybody has any input on this, i'd appreciate it. thank you!

Answer:
Every computer with an industry-standard sound card is able to record from a variety of sources: a microphone, stereo, CD player, line-in, etc. To record an audio clip playing on you computer, you will need to record from stereo. Here's how:
  1. Go to Start Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices
  2. Click on the Audio tab
  3. Click on the Volume button in the Sound Recording group
  4. Go to Options Properties
  5. Check the box next to 'Stereo Mix' under 'Show the following volume controls:' and click OK.
  6. Check 'Select' next to Stereo Mix
  7. Drag the Stereo Mix volume control all the way up.
Now you need to a program to record the audio. The Sound Recorder program that comes with Windows works fine, but feel free to use other programs like Adobe Audition. You are now ready to begin recording. Click the record button in Sound Recorder and play the portion of clip you wish to capture. Good luck.
