Question:
I've been wanting to get a digital camera for a while now.
I'm going to buy the Canon SD 450.
But my friend just got a camcorder and said it was a cheap brand.
It has lots of cool features though like you can record what's on TV and it makes it into .avi files for you to put on the computer. It also could work as a webcam and stuff.
So I thought those are pretty cool features that Canon SD 450 doesn't have.
Sp any recommendations for camcorders?
Oh yeah, I really am looking for something portable. Not those big cam corders. The kind my friend got was small and pocket sized.
Answer:
I don't have a specific recommendation on camcorders however I do recommend for you to go to http://www.cnet.com. It's where I would go to read up on a whole bunch of reviews on all the latest gadgets, camcorders and digi-cams included. Find the features you're most interested in and don't forget to weigh in any reader reviews to balance against any potential bias (think advertising dollars) the cnet reviewers themselves may or may not have for that particular review. Like for example, cnet loves iPods but I among many others consider iPods way overrated. The reader reviews on cnet reflect the differing opinion real people occasionally have against cnet. The more info you have, the better you feel about your purchase decision! Happy hunting.
PS: If you eventually decide to go with a digital camera instead and it uses AA batteries, then you better buy some NiMH batteries and a charger so you don't go broke. And remember to not fall under the trap of buying strictly by the specs. Like for digi-cams, there are many examples of 7 mega-pixel cameras that give blurrier pictures than 5 or 6 megapixel cameras. Quality is every bit as important as specs, which is why reading reviews are essential.

although, im not an expert in photography... i'm sure a real digital camera will take better pictures than any camcorder. so while you may be attracted to all the extra functions a camcorder may provide ~ be careful not to overlook a basic function like taking pictures.
OHHH actually... i was in a very similar situation a few weeks ago.
i'm planning to visit korea after highschool graduation. so, in preparation i started looking for something that was compact. i narrowed down to a casio exilim... but at that time i was watching the kdrama goong. and i don't know if you've seen it - one of shin's friends always holds one of those camcorders / camera hybrids. it's really sleek and nothing i've seen here locally in stores. heeeh, then i knew i had to get one !!

ehh im babbling on too long ~
if ur interested i'll write a review after i recieve it and get to play with it a lil more.

That looks awesome haha. Yeah, tell me how it is when you get it.
I guess I would take pictures more than do videos. Digital cameras do both already.
BUT BUT... I was just impressed with my friend's camcorder feature where he can record stuff from his TV into computer movie files right away.
Then now I'm hooked and becoming more and more intrested.
Oh yeah, I haven't heard of TCL but I checked your link. How much does it cost? cause aren't camcorders suppose to be more expensive then cameras? and this being all compact would be MORE expensive right? haha
Answer:
I don't much about this but if you want a Camcorder, I would recommend one that's made especially for videotaping instead of one that's primary on digital pictures. Maybe one of those Sony Handycams? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) . (Don't know much about it though). I have a canon digital camera and it has a 3 minute timer, which is so annoying... my friend has a Sony digicam but it has no time limits. So whatever u get, make sure yours doesn't have any time restrictions (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Answer:
What do you really want?
Do you want to record movies or do you want to take pictures?
If you record movies... what will you use it for?
Will you record a movie to go woot lets put it on youtube and put it on my myspace or something?
Or will you go and make an epic video... maybe for a class or just a movie. You know what I mean right? You recall those Wongfu production videos? Like the Yellowfever and the series of music video lipsyncs?
What am I trying to do?
Im trying to help you figure out what you really want. If you just want to record video for fun just get that canon. If you want to record videos and make something from it then get a real camcorder.
If camcorder, think DV... think high quality video that you can really work with and edit easily. Kinda like the camera I told Juku.. um dongie to get which got stolen before she got much use from it... _
If primary focus is nice pictures then get your camera and use it to record video. If that camera is horrid at recording video find another one. My Sony W1 records video just fine and can eat through memory sticks like no tomorrow but it records nice enough.
Edit: specs says Shoot your own high-quality movies with Fast Frame Rate Movie Mode. Now you can reel them in at 60 fps (320 x 240) or 30 fps (640 x 480). so if you want video for fun then thats more than enough. Just check the time limit. If its to the out of memory then thats perfect.

how much is that? it looks really kew!
Answer:
did you look at the sanyo camcorder/cameras? they look more reliable than the tcl dv007 to me but i never used either of them so i wouldn't know.
Answer:
u should do sum research b4 purchasing anything
Answer:
i've been researching on camcorders for months now and recently bought the sony dcr-hc42, mini dv. been playing around with it and i'm really satisfy with all the features it has. i agree with truffles, if you're looking for something to just take pictures with a digital camera will do a much better job. i have the canon sd500 and it take much better pictures than the hc42. about the size, it's small, but there are smaller camcorders, it fits into the palm of your hand, but it won't fit into your pocket.

Answer:
Hmmm... Well I figured out I'd probably be taking pictures more than video so I'll just stick with getting the Canon SD450.
Is there a time limit on this camera's movie mode? I haven't read anywhere that there is one. All it says on sites is that it has a movie mode.
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Feel free to keep talking about Camcorders though, I'm still interested in learning about which ones are cool.

probably only limited by the amount of space you've got on your memory card.

theres no time limit. it just uses the space on your memory card (which can be used up quick!)
Not sure how similar the sd450 and sd500 quality are, but heres a short clip i took with my SD500 in movie mode. Quality isnt the best.. i would say its decent for short clips.

Cool, thanks for the clip QWK!
How much space do you think the movie takes up on a memory card?
Is it like 1 minute = ? MB? Should I get atleast a 1GB SD Memory if I want to take movies?
LOL, and cute Emily. Is that your little sis?
Haha, I heard her speak some Vietnamese.
Damn, there are a lot of Viet people on Soompi aren't there?
I am also. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

That video clip that i posted... the original was about 2 1/2 minutes and it took up about 180MB on the memory card. The movie setting i had the camera was on was 640x480. But when i transferred the clip onto the computer, i could rename the file and save it and it would only be around 9-10 MB.
If you plan on taking short movie clips.. i would recommend a 1GB memory card. (A 512 would do as well)
