Wash. Woman Booted Off Plane Over T-Shirt

Question:
Wash. Woman Booted Off Plane Over T-Shirt
Oct 06 3:32 PM US/Eastern

RENO, Nev.
A woman was booted off a Southwest Airlines flight for wearing a T- shirt that bore an expletive and images of President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Lorrie Heasley of Woodland, Wash., said she plans to press a civil- rights complaint against the airline over Tuesday's action at Reno- Tahoe International Airport, halfway through Heasley's scheduled trip from Los Angeles to Portland, Ore.
I have cousins in Iraq and other relatives going to war, Heasley told the Reno Gazette-Journal. Here we are trying to free another country and I have to get off an airplane ... over a T-shirt. That's not freedom.
Southwest Airlines spokeswoman Marilee McInnis said several passengers complained about the shirt.
Heasley, a 32-year-old lumber saleswoman, said passengers began complaining after she and her husband, Ron, moved to the front of the cabin in Reno.
She agreed to cover the words with a sweatshirt, but when the sweatshirt slipped while she was trying to sleep, she was ordered to wear her T-shirt inside-out or leave.
She and her husband left. They arrived home in a rental car Wednesday afternoon.
McInnis said Southwest rules allow the airline to deny boarding to any passenger whose clothing is lewd, obscene or patently offensive.
But Allen Lichtenstein, lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union in Las Vegas, said it might be problematic that the airline changed rules in the middle of a flight.
Heasley said she has been in touch with ACLU lawyers in Seattle, and wants Southwest to reimburse her for the last leg of the trip.

Answer:
I looked up expletive in the dictionary but I'm not sure I understood it completely
was it like f**k or something?
I don't get it
Answer:
I really don't get people who wear shirt of the ilk; it's like they're just asking for trouble, and when trouble comes, they complain. Just goes to show you how bright some of them can be.
Answer:
I think thats pretty idiotic just to kick someone off over a t-shirt.
Answer:
the sweatshirt slipped and what???
the article makes it sound like they were taken off the plane in the middle of the flight...or they made a special stop over a t-shirt.
if that's the case, then that's retarded.
Answer:
if bush was a better leader he wouldn't have these kinds of people in his country.
Answer:

if bush was a better leader he wouldn't have these kinds of people in his country.
That's really ignorant. These kind of people will exist no matter how great a leader is (not saying Bush is a good leader) or who is the leader. As long as there is freedom of expression, people like her will exist (although, I dare say even with the absence of freedom of expression, some people will still risk life and limb and imprisonment to protest/hate political leaders and the govt.). They'll just hate/protest another leader instead of Bush and so on so forth. And it's not Bush's country, he doesn't own America, he just run it with the consent of the majority of the people.

wow, you need to lay off the kool-aid. How you managed to bring Bush into this whole thing, you could be the next Michael moore. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
Answer:
the shirt included Bush, so I guess that makes --his name at least--part of the convo. and yes, to the person who asked--it was the F word, with -ers added at the end.

Answer:
Eh - I don't see what the point is of wearing a shirt like that. What exactly was her point?
Answer:
She was asked to cover it up which she did. Seeing how she wasn't able to keep it covered up despite that, they asked her to flip it inside out which is understandble. She wasn't Booted off she was given an ultimatum and decide to leave on her own. I see no injustice here. Wearing a shirt with the word i can't read scribbled acrossed it for everyone to see is no different than a person screaming it out loud over and over again and being disruptive and obscene. She does have the right to free speech but if the airlines feel she is disruptive with her shirt they have the right to ask her to get off the plane. Though I think it would be fair for them to at least give her a refund.
Answer:
^ I agree
Oh there was big news on that on our news. My friend was even on the flight when that happened, i was outside the port saying good bye.
Answer:
she should have just wore that shirt at home. what's her point anyway? looking for supporters?
Answer:
I don't really agree with the f-word being showcased around like that. There's freedom of expression and then there's just asking for it.
Answer:
she's just asking for it.
Answer:
oh this is so stupid...!!! what ever happens to freedom of speech?!!!!!!!

Freedom of speech is a right, and as such, should be exercised RESPONSIBLY (that's the key word here[A LOT of people miss this part]). You can't just say whatever you want and claim freedom of speech, it doesn't work that way. The woman in the article clearly did not exercise her right responsibly, so she had it coming. No one to blame but herself.

I'll elaborate further if needed, but you should get where I'm going with this.
Answer:
Free Speech is allowed. But when in a place of business, which Southwest Airlines is, they have rules and you HAVE to follow those rules. Just like on soompi. There is no freedom of speech on soompi.
