15 Minutes; Drunk Driving Program.

Question:
Okay, I'm not sure if anyone has experienced it, but 15 minutes is this program at my school which happens every 2 years. It should be a nationwide program.. i think, don't take my words for it :x
Anyways, its only Juniors + Seniors who can attend. Basically, what happens is that before this program, a month or 2 before, there is a sign up where you can act as a dead person from drunk driving, or the drunk driver. We have to write an essay to explain why we want/deserve the parts and they choose. So after they choose, they make their parents (the dead/ suspect) sign a form to let them know they are going to do this, but the parents don't know when they are going to do it.
Yesterday and today they had the program, and it was... let me just say.. SO REAL.
Yesterday, they blocked a road, and what happened is that Juniors and Seniors were called out of their classrooms and sent outside to the streets. Right before their eyes, they ACTUALLY see a car crash, a real one right before their eyes. Out of the cars, victims (the ones that were chosen/signed up to be dead) were pulled out of the car bleeding massively (all makeup). During the same time, the students in their rooms at my school, Freshmens + Sophmores, hear a 911 call through the school speaker, and its like a real call saying that a drunk driving accident happened and there are a lot of smoke, etc.
Thats just the first day.
Afterwards, Juniors + Seniors are sent back to the classrooms. Now, the DEAD ppl + the survivor (aka the drunk driver) are sent away. Supposedly, the suspect who caused the drunk driving is sent to jail. Also, their parents are ACTUALLY called and told that their child died b/c of drunk driving. If the parents are smart enough they actually remember signing a form, if not, oh dear :x
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS is that both the dead and the drunk driver are taken to a hotel and their cellphones + other ways to comminucate with the outside world is taken away, so that it actually seems as if they are dead/ at jail.
Today, they had the funeral for the dead in the gym, once again only Juniors + Seniors. It was pitch black, and once everyone sits down, they see this video clip of how everything happened. The suspect (a male this time and also a student here) and his girlfriend ( student who is one of the dead) are coming home from a party, having a few sips of beer. They are driving drunk. At the same time, 3 girls get in a car and head home. The video is a self camera of the drunk driver + girlfriend, and they are all happy, when all of a sudden you see this bright light, screaming, holding hands, and then bang. They die. Later on, the drunk driver + those who qualified and pretended to be dead, say speeches saying how they are sorry that they disappointed their parents for driving drunk, how they couldnt be there for family. Gosh, everyone was bawling!! It was so sad! Then the parents of the dead and the drunk driver are actually there and they say a speech saying how good their daughter/son was. They were their jewels etc.
keep in mind that the suspect aka the drunk drivers, and the victims of the drunk driving are student at my HS who applied for it by writing the essay
Very intense.
In the end, it was over, the parents who couldn't see their children for 24 hours and couldn't contact gave each other hugs and kisses, tears here and there.
This actually opened my eyes to reality.
--------
I heard this all from a Junior who when there, since I'm a freshmen. --; I'll be doing it in my Junior year as well.
Hmm, does anyone have programs like this at their schools?
Like I said before.. very big eye opener.
Answer:
oh boy. thats intense...
But its a great idea for adolescents to be aware of the consequenes
I have a feeling that we don't have something even close to that here.. but I wouldn't really know XD
Answer:
Hey!!! our school does that too. It happened last two weeks ago. It is very sad though.(IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) i never lost a friend but I lost an Uncle.(IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) very sad!
Answer:
HEY!!! i just had my assembly for that today! haha...the second part of it is tomorrw. its suppose to be really dramatic and touching, but from what i saw today...it was quite boring. =/ maybe it was the heat from the sun since we were all sitting outside.
Answer:
I had an assembly about drunk driving yesterday for about 80 minutes woo!
Answer:
You know, learning would be so much more effective if it wasn't scripted.
But I guess this works...
Answer:
we have this at our school every two or four years. i heard from upperclassmans that it is really intense. im a freshman right now, so i'll probably get to experience it my senior or junior year.
Answer:
hey i think we have that at our school too! seriously, it looks so real o_o
Answer:
I've heard of one of those drills sort of ...
Except instead, the dead person just has a I'M DEAD sign, wears dark makeup, and no one can talk to them.
Yeah ... But it seems pretty interesting and eye opening ...
Answer:
We had that at my high school when I was a senior... it was ok I guess, just knowing the fact that it's not real changes the whole situation. The most memorable part of ours was that the crashed car was actually my friends that got impounded and we took the cd deck out of it.
Answer:
That is the best idea against drunk driving I've ever heard.
Answer:
We had that program when I was in high school back in 2000 and the students who were actors in the program broke down and cried while making their speeches to the audience. I had a hard time believing their emotions were genuine because they were actors but I can understand how they had to convey their message and I can see how a topic like this can make some people react in such a way.
It's a great program because of what it's trying to do, and I suppose they do a good job at trying to get the message across. I did see a number of the audience members react emotionally.
Answer:
that's brilliant. We just have boring assemblies where they tell you about drunk drivers...
Although I must admit the crashed car they dragged into our school was a pretty shocking sight. They had photos of the dead (they were a couple... the wife was pregnant)
But that sounds amazing. I wish we had that, except it would suck if the 'dead' really got into an accident and the parents think its a joke or something
Answer:
good stuff. the education system NEEDS to provide real situation insight... i wish i could partake in an activity.
although we never had anything like that from school or anywhere else, this story actually touched my heart. i stumbled upon it about 5 years ago and is a constant reminder of why not to drink and drive, nor drive recklessly...
it is very disturbing, graphically... nothing gorey, but it is VERY OUT OF THE ORDINARY. i advise anyone to visit the link at your own risk.
remember... not all victims of drunk driving actually die.

Agreed, all i got was the assemblies before prom senior year... useless. I think the video that they showed me in my driving classes when I was 15 was a lot more intense and scarier. Sounds like a good program though, I would support it... i sure wouldn't want to get killed by some ignorant kid who thinks they can drive while intoxicated... horrible way to go.
Answer:
Ya... I know this thing, where the grim reaper comes into your class and kills the student by putting white paint all over the students face, and that student cannot talk to anyone the entire day. In the gym, the parents of the students read off the letter they wrote to their child. The gym gets really quiet and people start to get emotional and cry. It's horrible... and ya it is every 2 years. They're all sent to a hotel or something like that after school.
Answer:
Our school did that too. I didn't watch it because I'm not a junior or senior yet.
But, the most depressing part was. The week after that progam was presented at our school.
One of the graduating seniors (I think) was killed in a car accident in results of a drunk driver I believe .__.
