What is horsepower?

Question:
What does horsepower do?
I want to get a Yaris Hybrid, but my dad keeps vouching for something with more horsepower. HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER! HORSEPOWER!
Is it that important?
Is a car less safe if you don't have as much horsepower? Does horsepower only have to do with speed?
Come on. I'm just a high school student hoping to help the environment and cut back on our family expenses. What's wrong with a Yaris?
Forgive me; I don't know much about cars.
Answer:
hey... well it depends what you mean by safer, suppose you were driving and a massive truck was behind you, following very close, and then started to pressure you and because you car has not much horse power then you would be stuck in that situation. taking into account that no other car was ahead of u.
But if you had a high performance machine, you could speed away and leave it in your dust ROFL
but i think a yaris is fine, if your not a rev head lol (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
Answer:
there's nothing wrong with a Yaris Hybrid. cheap on gas and gets you from point A to B, and it doesnt look that bad. if your not into performance or things like that there's no need to look for a car with a lot of horsepower, but it's nice to have a few ponies to give you that extra oompf. however you spell that word.
Answer:
theres a yaris hybrid? i didnt know they had one =O
Answer:
go honda fit. sportier with vtac yo!
Answer:
horsepower is a measure of work
Answer:
and also a factor of torque. man can we switch parents. they want a prius _
Answer:
Lol... my dad keeps saying the same thing about horsepower.
He was looking at the VW Rabbit, and I told him it was a 2.5 liter 150 hp engine. He said that would not be enough.

Answer:
quick and dirty
torque = how much you can pull
horsepower = how fast you can pull it
Answer:
Wait... since when did the Yaris come in a hybrid?
lol with 106 hp, that thing is quite slow.
It is quite fuel efficient.
Answer:
yeah, horsepower is a unit of work in the physics sense.
before cars had 200+, 300+, 400+, 500+ horsepower, they ran fine. 200 HP will still run fine.
Answer:
My 165hp RS is fine for general city driving but definately lacks oomf and passing power....I can only imagine how bad a 106hp Yaris would be....I don't know, I wouldn't be able to stand it.
Answer:
i wish I had a dad like yours since the more HP the less price range my dad has on a car.
106hp Yaris is good for gas-mileage but nothing more.
I drove my brother's Mitsu Mirage with only 90 something hp. Good for city driving but when youre on the highway and cars are coming after you when you get on the ramp and onto the highway, you'll be crapping in your pants trying to push it to highway speeds.
Answer:
i can't even imagine what driving a yaris would be like. i guess it is safer to some degree to have more horsepower. imagine trying to pull out onto a busy highway with that thing. i guess if all you plan to do is drive locally and not onto busy highways it's fine
Answer:
106 isn't a lot, but for a yaris it's decent enough to pull and merge onto the freeway since the car isn't really heavy. even at 106hp, it'll still probably accelerate faster than most trucks and suvs since those things weigh nearly 3 tons.
Answer:
Horsepower has nothing to do with safety really. HP is for those who are speed greedy. You can't really find a hybrid with lots of hp unless you pay like over 30k. Like the Honda Accord Hybrid has 200 something hp, but it cost 30k+.
Answer:
Horsepower is only a concern for those who want performance out of their vehicle. But if you want economy and practicality, horsepower is something you can ignore.
