Question:
this is just to find out some info.
most people feel that dubs are worse than the original voice acting and would prefer subtitles in anime/dramas/etc. why? the only reasons i can think of are because:
- you prefer works to be in their original form
- you think the quality is not as good in english/whatever language as in japanese (main reason i assume)
- you like japanese voice actors and not american ones
- you hate everything that goes from japan to america
for the most part, i also like to watch anime with subtitles in japanese. it doesn't really matter that much to me though. i think people prefer anime in japanese because that's the first language they hear it in. think about it. if all of a sudden, someone you knew started to speak a foreign language and their voice was one pitch lower or higher (or completely different), you'd find it to be weird, no? so i think that if we were to watch an anime series in english, THEN japanese, we would find the english versions to be ok or even better.

it's possible...i remember watching initial d, ranma 1/2, DBZ in cantonese dubs first and then watching them in japanese and i still kinda preferred the cantonese dub more. i can't say what would happen if i watched an english dub first and then the subbed version because the only thing i've watched in english only so far is super milk-chan and that was just dumb lol. but i'd say your 1st and 2nd reasons are right on...

- changing the character names to cheesy stereotypical ones
- there are times when it's impossible for dubbers to time what they're saying with the movement of the lips of their characters
- voices can be annoying, especially when they're trying so hard to make a high pitched character and do a bad job on it

Yeah cuz I watched Inuyasha in english first and I got use to it. Then I started watching it in Japanese, the english and japanese voices for Inuyasha started to sounds similar to me. Well I still prefer watching the english version of Inuyasha because I started watching it in english first.
The dubs for Initial D is horrible. They call Takumi, Tak. wth? They changed some other names too, which I didn't like it.

No matter how good an English dubbing job a company does, it never captures what the original team wanted to do with it as they have no collaboration with the English dub team and the voice actors themselves don't even use the original works as a reference point.
Plus, the differences in culture aren't portrayed in the way they speak and react to situations. The fact that I don't understand Japanese or any other language doesn't matter. Why do people listen to foreign opera when they don't understand the words? Why not translate to English(although they do sometimes)? Because you get the meaning across with the way you say it.
It doesn't just go for anime. Foreign live-action movies too should never be dubbed into another language. Keep the source material pure as it's the closest way you're going to experience the work the way it was meant to be, save for actually learning the language.

I mainly like watching subbs though, i watched a bit of the dubbed naruto. hahaha irks my ears NAROODOO, SASKAY etc... Also their OP theme is crap.

first of all:::: dubbing... bad.
-they have cheesy lines like,i`m going to kill you now.
-they don`t seem like they are really into it
-they don`t capture the emotions of the characters like the nihonjin do.
-i think the nihonjin`s voices are sexier.. except for the girls .. they still sound kind of annoying. sad to say -____-

Sometimes, when you start out with English Version of an Anime, you just get used to it. But, since most Anime originated as Japanese, it's better. If you do some comparing between the two, the Subs are most of the time better than the Dubs...

im with him on this , i preferred the Cantonese Dubs on Initial D then the Japanese ones
other then that , id prefer some English Dubs over japanese ones in a few gundam series
Zechs in Gundam Wing sounded better in English , voice really suited his character
