Is my jacket too small?

Question:
On the advice of many I decided to try the slimmer size 40 jacket instead of a 42 - I am slight of build in the upper body, tall (5' 11''). I wear a 16-34 shirt (don't know my chest size offhand but I am either a 40 or a 41 depending on the manu).
Although I think the jacket looks good, a bit slimmer than a typical 42 which tends to be too big in the chest for me. It does feel a little tighter than I'd like, mostly due to my paunch. My question is whether or not it looks to small.
I realize this is not a great pic, but here goes anyway... I can take some more later tonight.

Thanks for your opinions!
Answer:
the length of the jacket is a tad short, the shoulder looks to be ok, can't really tell from this angle. i also can't really tell if the jacket fits ok since that woman's weight on the jacket makes it pull in that direction. you'll have to take bette pics my friend. you could have also used a pocket square =p
Answer:
If a 40 fits better in the chest but not in the paunch... lose the paunch. Stop drinking anything but water, replace some carbs with protein, and get a little exercise. Easy... you'll fit better and look better in everything without compromising on the size and it will only take a few weeks to make a difference. You can probably go with a smaller collar / shirt as it is.
Answer:
If you can't breathe when it's buttoned, then yes it's too small.
Shoulders look fine, though, so drop a few pounds and Bob's your uncle.
Answer:
Its tough to tell from that pic but it looks a little short to me and possibly a little tight around the middle.
Answer:
thanks guys, I think it is a bit too tight around the waist, but I like the idea of losing some of the gut rather than getting a new suit. Often I just wear the jacket open with a dress shirt (I live in SoCal, it is very casual here). As long as the chest and shoulders look right, I can work on the belly.
Answer:
Take a better pic.
Answer:
I think the length is fine - probably more due to the angle than anything else.
does the jacket cover your rear end?
Answer:
Yes, rear end is completely covered. It's just a little tight (but there is still about 3 inches of slack) in the belly. I will post better pics later tonight.
Answer:
If that's the only disruption of the line you get with your arm around a woman, then I'm guessing it fits very well.
Answer:
Jacket looks good through the shoulders and chest. You could use another inch through the middle button, which is easy to alter at your tailors. Or leave the middle as is and use it as inspiration to drop a few pounds. I have a couple of pairs of pants that are very slightly too tight. I keep them that way to tell me when I've gained a couple pounds... a reminder.
I like the look of that fabric.... seems like a nice, light weight that reflects the light very well.
Answer:
YOu could always have the jacket let out a bit too.

here's some more pics of the jacket

I could lose an inch around the waist, I like that idea. Also, shouldn't I shorten the sleeve a little bit?
Answer:
do you see how the back vent pulls even when you're just standing? that means it doesn't fit well and you need more material to cover your ass.
Answer:
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ He's right. That gathering above the vent doesn't look well-fitting. Perhaps there's some material to let out, but it could be difficult.
And yes, you should shorten the cuffs, if, as per the general preference on this forum, you like to have shirt cuff visible.
