Question:
I have to ask a friend of mine in a different city to reserve a tuxedo outfit for a wedding that I plan on attending. I'm not sure what color shirt, jacket and pants, and vest I should get. Here are my complexions:
black hair, dark brown eyes, and my skin color ... well, originally I'm from Iran. I'm neither white nor brown. I would say something in between. Sort of like this guy here,
http://saeedfathirowshan.com/web/pejmanbazeghi.gif and just like him, i usually have a 5 o'clock shadow. I've also attached my picture to this post. There's also the possibility that I'll be a bit tanned (I tan relatively slowly but easily) as the wedding is in tropical conditions by the beach and I have 5 full days to get some sun, but only a bit and most likely like in the picture attached. Oh, and I'm the one on the right with the black 'sahara' shirt.
Now a tux, as much as I hate it, is a must for this wedding. I'm asking for a single button breasted jacket, as I'm 5ft7in (173cm) and slim/athletic. It's the colors that confuse me. Usually, pink, a bit dark or medium blue, black, and white shirts suit me well, and beige, light brown, and some yellows go horrible. But I still have no idea what to get. I was thinking of a plain black jacket, plain white shirt, and maybe a silver or patterned black vest.
Any comments/suggestions?
Answer:
The classic formula will serve you best (and is the only advice you'll get around here). Black single-button peak lapel tuxedo, or a double-breasted tuxedo, white shirt, ideally spread collar, black tie and cummerbund. No vest, and esp. no silver vest.
Most rentals are three button, or some such thing, but if you ask, they'll have access to a single button peak lapel.
Answer:
Your choice is good. Go with a peak lapel, black hand tied bow tie, fold down collar and the vest I would say is optional. My suggestion would be a deep gray, almost with a touch of purple tint if you can imagine it.
Answer:
I think you would look great in a black tux--black jacket, matching black pants, with a black bow tie tied yourself and a white tuxedo shirt. If you wear a vest, make it black too, and cut low, not a vest that buttons up above your sternum.
Answer:
I have a similar complexion (spanish/hungarian, though), and I went with the standard black 1 button peak lapel tux. I did opt for an off-white/cream waistcoat (ie, low buttons, with fancy lapels) rather than a black vest or a cummerbund.
Answer:
Keep it classic. Keep it simple. Sometimes that means boring, but at least your outfit won't look so dated in five years when you look back at the wedding photos.
black and white, no velvet, save the color for the handkerchief
Answer:
The tuxedo, if you plan on wearing one, is really among the simplest outfit for ANY man. When it comes to formal, everybody looks good in classic tuxedo getup: black jacket, white shirt, black trousers, black bowtie, black shoes.
It has taken the English over 100 years to perfect this ensemble. The modern addition of funky colors (vests, bowties..etc) is perpetuated by sartorial morons in the vain hope of improving upon what is already perfect, i.e, one would not see James Bond in a red tuxedo.
Answer:
I agree, but I wouldn't call a dark gray vest "funky" really.
Now wait, funky bowties? I've seen a few, but most people just go for the black, no?
Answer:
It's called black tie for a reason. Don't wear a funky tie.
Answer:
I'm not, but I won't be wearing a tie either. Bowtie...
