Answer:
for a 'younger' more 'hip' place i like Hotel QT its just off of times square. Quirky designy atmosphere with comfortable beds and a bar that you can swim up to from the pool.
Answer:
400 total or per night? :)
I don't know what your taste in hotels is, but I personally like to stay in boutique hotels when I travel. The last time I was in NYC, I stayed at the 70 Park Avenue Kimpton Hotel. The room ended up being cheaper and larger (large for NYC standards as you'll see most normal priced rooms can be the size of a closet) than a more expensive room I had at the SoHo Grand prior. I thought the 70 Park Hotel was a nice short walk down to the stores on the rest of Park Ave. as well as over on Madison and 5th. However, this was in September, so it wasn't as cold as now, or as cold as it might be in a few months. There's also the Millennium UN Plaza Hotel which is a bit more east that's nice for the price.
Answer:
I'm very partial to the Flatotel on 52nd between 6th and 7th. Very nice rooms, well within your budget (if you're talking $400 per night) and a very easy walk to Times Sq. and shopping on 5th and Madison Aves.

I like the Palace on Madison. Some rooms are in your price range of around $400 a night.
Answer:
If you want central, a good value and NOT that close to Times Square I would stay at Le Parker Meridian.

Answer:
I've only stayed at a handful of hotels but my favorite was the Salisbury, directly across the street from LPM
really quaint hotel, rooms are nice, price is way under your budget and they easily have the best Continental breakfast I've ever seen. It was worth it to get up early enough to grub down. And the location is as central as you can get, right next to major subway lines and like 2 blocks from Bergdorf etc.
Answer:
The Guardian Newspaper recommended those ten hotels recently:

Answer:
Depends on where you want to be, if you plan to spend much time in the room beyond sleeping and how long you expect to stay.
Some good possibilities are:
The Carlton- 29th and Madison- Just redone. Short walk to 5th Ave, etc. but also easy to get to other interesting areas like Chelsea, the Flatiron.
The Benjamin- 50th and Lexington- Short walk to Rockefeller Center, Madison Ave, Museums. Right near a couple of subway stops that will help you get anywhere else quickly. Larger rooms than most, very understated. It isn't the Ritz Carlton but I think it is a better hotel than many of the other better known names.
If you want a clean, comfortable room for a good price you could do a lot worse than the Hilton Garden Inn or the Hampton Inn on 8th Ave in the Times Square area. They are nothing special- but they are newer and should come in well below your $400 limit. Short walks to Broadway, etc.
One other option along the same line is the Hilton Garden Inn Chelsea. Newer hotel in an interesting neighborhood. Yes, it is a chain but like the others, a good value for the price.
Answer:
I really like the Sofitel, though their rate (like most NYC hotels) has gone from $260 to $400-500 in the past couple of years.
Answer:
Benjanmin, Beekman, Plaza 50 - all good. They're owned by Affinia. They're whole pitch is that they operate "home-like" hotels. You can get them to customize just about anything you want.
Collegue of mine would always have SF Journal delivered in the morning with his coffee, and required a special pillow. They would do it all, and typically at a good price.
Answer:
I use priceline fairly frequently and pick 4* central park south and get le parker meridian last i went. prior to that the essex. usually 30%+ off internet rate.
check in with a $20 on top of your amex and ask for an upgrade - 90% effective in the city.
Answer:
You know, all the years that I have traveled on business I've never thought of trying this. Great idea, thanks.
I wonder if this would work for airline upgrades?
Answer:
We stay at hotels on the upper West Side (usually near Zabars) and the price and quality is just right.
