Best-edited men’s stores in NYC?

Question:
Dear Folks:
Working on another story for the Sun: a short list of the best-edited men’s stores in NYC.
A couple of types of good stores are out: Large stores (Bergdorf’s, Barneys, etc.) and stores that only or primarily carry the house label (Seize sur Vingt, Jay Kos, etc.) If it’s only a website, it’s out too – I need B&M stores.
Possible candidates are stores like Oak, Odin, and Peter Elliot.
Stores need not be in midtown or downtown Manhattan: Anything in NYC will do.
What’s on your list?
Answer:
How about Atelier?
Answer:
I would throw in Cenci.
Answer:
Isn't all of Cenci's stuff house label? I know it's from v. good makers.
Answer:
Opening Ceremony (though not men's exclusively).
I'm a big fan of Hollander & Lexer and Freeman's - more the former than the latter. Stuart & Wright in Ft Greene is also quite nice, although the people working there are assholes.
Vinny's (on Dean & Flatbush in BK), Brooklyn Circus, Dave's Quality Meats, Atmos and Goliath are my favorites for what the kids call "streetwear". Vinny's is the busiest store in NYC on a Saturday afternoon.
Answer:
I don't think Peter Elliot is all that well edited. I think the best edited stores in New York are probably Bergdorf and Paul Stuart, but they are out. You may have a hard time with your limitations.
Answer:
Odin
oops - noticed that was already in the OP
Answer:
Venanzi
I am not your editor, but I would push back on the idea that house brand focus should be out. I think emphasizing the label is somewhat irrelevant in men's clothing (or should be). A great "editor" is, to me, someone who can find out who makes the best overcoats, for example, in a classic pattern or style. Whether, the overcoat carries the store's name or the manufacturer's shouldn't really matter. Frankly, if I see a designer's name, all I think is that's one more mouth to feed.
Answer:
For streetwear, I'd vote Odin and maybe Blue in Green.
Do people actually like Freeman's? (Not really related to the original question because I think most of their stuff is "house brand" ... but I may be wrong.) I like their suits, but I've found the fits of their other clothes to be awkward (esp. the shirt jackets).
Answer:
There's Jeffrey on 14th st.
Answer:
I still haven't made it there, but I have been meaning to.
Answer:
I think you will be underwhelmed
Answer:
I am glad you are writing this article because I hate it when they misspell things in the store.
Answer:
My initial enthusiasm is waning.
I popped by last week to look at a pea coat and discovered it's priced to move at $1600.
"Fully canvassed," said the shopkeep.
I'm not sure why.
lefty
Answer:
...like 'Jeffery'?
I'll throw in a vote for Oak, as well as this place in Cobble Hill (don't know the name) on Smith Street, and, my other big favorite, Freeman's Sporting Club. Their clothes are all house label, but beautiful stuff.
