Question:
I just purchased these (
http://www.sierratradingpost.com/i/8...ed-For-Me.html) from STP. Are these of the typical quality of other SM Norwegian- or Goodyear-welted shoes?
The only SMs I had before these were Blake-stitched suede loafers, so I have no basis for comparison.
These don't seem to have as supple or thick leather as Polo-labeled C&J shoes. I'd appreciate some comments/opinions. Thanks.
Answer:
yes, i did not like the depth of this shoe as well. it was thinner than i expected for the upper and the finish was lacking perhaps because the shoes were in stp storage too long. looked dried up. . i promptly returned it.
i also bought the $875 retail sutor split toes as well, those were even worse. not worth even 100 dollars i immediately returned those as well.
Answer:
Again, are these typical of the Sutor Mantellassi quality?
Answer:
Someone on the forum purchased these vary shoes and posted the pics in the shoe porn thread, but I can't really remember who. Was it von Rothbart?
Answer:
Anyone else?
Answer:
Did you actually get the shoes yet? I think the best thing is for you to feel it in your hands and judge it for yourself.........
Answer:
Yes I did -- hence my remark earlier "These don't seem to have as supple or thick leather as Polo-labeled C&J shoes."
I just need a sanity check. I am still a shoe novice.

I received the the double monks, and I really like them. I think the antiquing is well done and the leather is soft, but still quite substantial. I like the suppleness of the leather. It feels different than the leather on all my other shoes (including PL EGs, Vass, FAMs, and even another pair of lower line Sutors), but in a good way. Color is great and the shoes look like they will wear very well.
I'm under the impression that the antique lace up version is the same as the monk strap variety as I've seen both in person at a store (assuming it's the same on STP). After having seen and handled them in the store, I was willing to pay the $600 sale price, but luckily they didn't have my size, well neither did STP, but the shoes I received still seem to fit pretty well.

Bought these shoes last week and promptly returned them. I didnt even have to try them on. In the picture they looked quite nice, but in person they were absolutely hideous. In addition, the row of stitching around the shoe seemed too narrow, or the upper was too wide for the sole. It was a very strange look. The leather upper was lacking in quality. The shoes had been stored improperly, without trees, so they were also misshapen, especially the insteps. Overall, I was very underwhelmed by this shoe, despite the "antiquing" and norwegian stitching.
They dont even come close in terms of either styling or quality to the Borgioli's I've purchased from Franco's in the past.
Answer:
I find this style attractive but once I try them on, they don't work. The way they crease when you walk doesn't look right.
Answer:
Well, I must admit I was hasty in my judgment earlier. I tried them on and walked around the house. The fit is outstanding for me and the upper turned out to be rather softer than indicated by handling the shoes.
However, the antiquing is not nearly as nice looking in person as was the case on the photograph, so I am still mulling over whether or not to keep them. Probably will.
Thank you all for the very helpful comments.

Answer:
Mantellassi uses a softer thinner leather for their uppers, when compared to English shoes. I forget the name. It's not necessarily lower quality, just different.
Also, those shoes have been stored for a while so they are going to need some polish and brushing to look showroom new. That's par for the course.
