Question:
I recently purchased a NWT Oxxford suit (Gibbons model) from ebay. It's made by Oxxford for Neiman Marcus. The jacket comes with unfinished sleeves, two pieces of loose thread and 9 buttons (8 for the sleeves and 1 spare). Unfortunately the thread is not long enough to make eight buttonholes. I don't think it's even long enough to sew 8 buttons on the sleeves. I would like to contact Oxxford via e-mail for additional threads but apparently they don't believe in e-mails (the website does not contain any e-mail address). If anyone has a regular contact at Oxxford (that uses e-mails), please pm me. Thanks.
Answer:
The thread provided is only for use in attaching the buttons. A competent tailor should have the appropriate thread and gimp needed to make the buttonholes. As for contacting Oxxford, I would suggest calling 212-593-0204 and asking for Mike.
Answer:
Won't the buttonholes on the sleeves be of a different color to the buttonholes on the jacket then?
Answer:
I dont think it will be a problem as your local tailor or seamstress probably use the same thread, it will just be a question of matchng the colour and approximate thickness. No need to stress. Just make sure they show you the match before they start sewing it.
Answer:
Any competent tailor who is able to either handstitch buttonholes (that's a very competent tailor in my book) or employ a machine to stitch buttonholes should be smart enough to minimize the color difference.
It's really not such a problem as you make it out to be. Again, the included thread is for attaching buttons, not to cut buttonholes
Answer:
One sharp dressed salesmen at Wilkes Bashford in San Francisco used to order the button hole stitching on his sleeves a different, contrasting color for a little fun. Last time I saw him he was wearing a plaid Oxxford jacket with sleeve button holes that picked up one of the smaller, brighter colors in the plaid. It was pretty cool! And, it didn't match the button hole colors along the front.
Answer:
I do that too with odd sportscoats. I match the sleeve buttonhole thread color to the lining of the jacket.
Answer:
yeah, i don't think it will be a big deal for you at all. I would recommend sending your jacket to Oxxford (after calling them first) for the buttonholes, they will do the best job and will probably have the most correct thread to use.
I send my jackets to a tailor in Atlanta for handstitched buttonholes, let me know if you'd like the contact info-- they have a pretty quick turnaround time and do a nice job.
Answer:
He is at Borrelli now and is probably the most competent sales person with the best taste in the entire SF area.
Answer:
haha do you mean Jim or Horace?
Answer:
You are right. I think he will give the S.F. Borrelli store a big boost.
