Leather sole care (not topys or taps)

Question:
Is there any benefit to conditioning the soles of your shoes? Does anyone do this? If its good for the uppers, why not the soles?
Answer:
I did on a pair yesterday and today and they will be sold soon. Good result as the leather was too dry IMO. They came out looking like a normal worn sole..after a drink!
Answer:
I occasionally put lineseed oil on the soles, works fine, and if I brush my shoes and polish them I put some cream on the sides and centerpart (where it flexes the most) of the sole too.
Answer:
Anyone have any ideas about dyeing refurbished soles to a darker brown? Something that will wear off, not rub off.

Answer:
I've always wondered whether conditioning soles wouldn't _soften_ them, and so increase the rate of wear. For this reason, I've never done it. But I admit that my theory is pure speculation.
Answer:
Interesting that I should see this question right now, just after visiting the Ferragamo boutique in Munich... I had a discussion with the salesperson about the alleged advantages of Tramezza, and "by the way" she mentioned that she recommended that if I used non-colour cream for the shoes, I should also put some on the soles. Also, she recommended laying the shoes on their sides after use, so as to allow the soles to dry better. I never heard these things before. And I did not dare to tell here that the first thing I do when I have new shoes is to put topys on...
Answer:
I have found a bottom stain which has a thick consistency so I am inclined to believe it helps prolong the life of the sole.
Answer:
How embarrassing
Answer:
Diana Vreeland said to always polish the sole of one's shoes.
Answer:
Nice...guess I walked into that one
Answer:
Won't polishing the sole make it soft and thus more prone to wear?
Answer:
Sorry about that, I couldn't resist.
Is this the kind of stuff... http://www.algeos.com/acatalog/Sole_Stain.html
I gather this will stain the sole but what if any conditioning properties it has I have no idea.
Answer:
I've always wondered this, and I don't know either way.
I have some NOS vintage shoes and the soles feel very hard and seem like they dried out while in storage, very loud "clop clop" when I walk, you would think they would crumble or chip off but they don't.
I know some ebay sellers put a cement-like substance on their shoes so they look better, I wonder what it is.
Answer:
I would guess that is similar, although the stuff I have is made by Fieblings. Comes in a variety of shades too.
Answer:
Does Fiebings offer a sole stain? I can find the edge dressing, but I imagine that has different properties.
