J press

Question:
Anyone here have any experience with J Press?  I am considering buying a couple things from them for the upcoming colder months, but I am not certain of the quality.  Given the price I thought I would ask here first.
Thanks.
Answer:
My father has shopped at the New York store (I usually go with him as his "consultant" but I won't buy there) and has tried to give me some of his things. I can tell that the suits are fused (from joining this forum) and the fabric seems pretty rough compared to Italian cloths. I think the quality is similar to lower-end Brooks Brothers, to which I also have to go with my dad. I think you'll be disappointed in the J Press quality, which is too bad because the look is good. The "old money" store ambience is nice as are the salesmen.
Answer:
Thanks for your reply. I am actually interested in buying a couple sweaters so the suit thing is not really a concern to me. I want some preppy sort-of-heavy cable knit sweaters and the ones that they have in their catalog seem like what I am looking for. Thing is some similar ones are available at J Crew so I am wondering weather I ought to just go with them. Personally I dislike brooks brothers for anything other than their no-iron dress shirts, so that is out of the question as well.
Answer:
I like J.Press clothing a lot. I also think they are very similiar to BB. I am thinking of buying on of their camel hair Duffle coats. Anyone saw it? It's not online, but its in their catologs.
Answer:
If you are looking at the "shaggy dog" shetland sweaters at J. Press, I'd recommend them highly.  They're not cheap, but they are miles ahead of J. Crew.  And they are a classic.
Annoyingly, lots of the colors sell out before the winter sale, though.
Answer:
I have always been satisfied with J.Press woolens, knits, socks, shirts, scarves, ties, and coats. It's also one of the few places left where the salesmen know their merchandise.
Answer:
On this forum, I think just about everything is miles ahead of J. Crew.

You might also want to look at Gloverall duffel coats. I believe the supplier to the British during Second World War -- and make for many private labels.
I have a Burberry duffel -- but think it's a bit much -- almost too luxurious and wished I'd gone with Gloverall or indeed J. Press.
Gloverall used to be carried by LL Bean in the USA.
Answer:
I don't think JPress is cheaper than Brooks Brothers. A merino sweater at www.jpressonline.com costs $90, one at Brooks Brothers is $69 (and I got a 25% discount on top of that&#33
Answer:
Sierra Trading post has gloverall duffel coats and pea coats. They look pretty nice, and seem a good deal at $199. Here's the link.
My question is, they claim to be 65% wool, doesn't that seem, I dunno, cheap? Anyone have experience?
EDIT: Sorry, this has nothing to do with J Press.
Answer:
I have over many years bought sweaters, shirts and clothing from J Press and can say that the quality is excellent. Their sport coats are of particularly fine quality. J Press is "old school" and is really one of a kind these days since Brooks Brothers has gone in various directions and finally is back to basics. I like J Press and do not hesitate to recommend them..

Re: the Gloverall brand. Maybe they've started to make them with synthetics or this is another line. The one's I've admired have always been 100% wool (or close to it).
Answer:
I almost bought one of these from Sierra Trading this spring until I looked at the Gloverall site. There appear to be three models and Sierra is selling the least expensive. Ben Silver was carrying the "luxury" coat for almost $700.
Here's the link to Gloverall:

Answer:
Looks like the 100% wool model is at GBP209. Not bad, but then again, not great if one's paying with green-backs.
I never saw the Silver "luxury" model, but as I said, the Burberry was too luxurious for such a functional jacket. It was the clothing equivalent of "Pimp my Ride". I almost feel embarassed wearing the damn thing, so it's mainly in storage.
