Protecting A Watch

Question:
I haven't worn a watch for a couple of years, basically because for some reason I'm always banging into things, and the last watch I wore (a ~$75 number) was scratched up pretty quickly.
Now, I'm actively trying to cultivate a more professional appearance at work and I think a good watch is necessary. Is there anything I can do (besides just being more careful) to protect a watch I'm wearing? Maybe certain materials or brands to look at?
And if anyone has suggestions for something durable in the $300 to $400 range (something professional but versatile, brown leather band preferred) I'm all ears.

Answer:
My suggestion is go Stainless Steel for durability. Also opt for a Saphire Crystal as it is more resistant to scratching (I was told it is only second to Diamond?). Also try to buy a watch that has a sunken crystal. I have an Omega Speedmaster Professional and it is great. Unfortunately, it has a raised crystal (actually a Hesalite crystal aka acrylic). Because it is raised it scuffs like a Mother.
Good luck... there are lots of options.
Answer:
Getting a nice watch with a crystal sapphire lens will stop the problem you had with scratched lens'. Be forewarned though, that the hard nature of this mineral also is subject to shatter with a severe impact. So, don't take it rock climbing! Otherwise, I've found that my watches with crystal lens' always look new when they're polished up and are very resistant to light bangs that come with daily life (on desks, doors, etc.).
Answer:
You might want to consider wearing long sleeved shirts/sweaters, etc. if you're particularly prone to bumping into things.
Then, you can debate the merits of wearing a nicer watch & so forth.
When I wear my nicer watches I do lean towards long sleeved shirts since then I know they're safe.
Maybe I'm being anal but it seems to work fine for me.
Stainless steel sounds like good material. I'd stay away from anything gold plated.
